Daniel Depetris makes a reasoned case here to fundamentally reconsider US policy in Syria, arguing for the withdrawal of US troops from Eastern Syria and the end of American sanctions to recognize the reality that Assad is entrenched in power but a deep humanitarian crisis endures and American policy is worsening it by isolating Syria:

More than fifteen million people, or 70 percent of Syria’s population, need humanitarian assistance to survive. Twelve million people are considered food insecure and more than thirteen million have fled their homes during the course of the conflict, including more than six million refugees. Nine out of ten Syrians live below the poverty line, the result of a depreciating Syrian currency and rising food prices.
